A Year of Unity and Inspiration - 5783
הקהל את העם האנשים והנשים והטף

Even though the Mitzvah of Hakhel took place on 1 day, the entire year is called a Year of Hakhel. We must live with the messages of Hakhel throughout the year and imbue everything with the meaning of Hakhel.

Hakhel was a Mitzvah that was observed every seven years, in the year following the Shemittah year. Men, women and children were obligated to travel to the Beis Hamikdash, where, on the first day of Chol Hamoed Sukkos, the king would publicly read passages of the Torah. The Rambam likens Hakhel to the experience of Maamad Har Sinai when the Torah was given.
The Torah emphasises the reason and purpose of this Mitzvah; “in order that they will learn and that they will hear and they will fear Hashem their G-d and they will guard to observe all of the words of this Torah.”
It was the Rebbe who truly who put Hakhel back on the agenda, encouraging the ‘observance’ of Hakhel in the strongest of terms and transforming it into a Mivtza campaign. Even if not an actual Mitzvah, the energy of Hakhel and inspiration should be utilised to further the objective of Hakhel “that they may learn… and fear Hashem”. The Rebbe also emphasised the theme of Achdus represented by Hakhel.
Throughout Hakhel year, Kollel will be hosting shiurim and programs related to the message of Hakhel. We invite you to join us.
